BECOMING VICTORIAN
We love seeing guests embrace the spirit of the Victorian era! Dressing in period attire adds a wonderful atmosphere to our events and helps bring history to life. While dressing up is encouraged, it is absolutely not required to attend or enjoy our programs. We welcome everyone, whether you're in full costume or modern attire.
If you'd like to explore Victorian fashion, here are some helpful resources to get you started:
Understanding Victorian Fashion
Victorian fashion spans many decades (1837-1901), so there is a lot of variety! Some key elements include:
-
Ladies: long skirts, high collars, lace, bonnets or hats, gloves, parasols, and modest silhouettes.
-
Gentlemen: suits with waistcoats, cravats or bow ties, top hats or bowlers, and pocket watches.
Easy Starter Ideas
-
Thrift store finds: long skirts, lace blouses, high-necked tops, vests, or tailored jackets.
-
Simple accessories: hats, gloves, brooches, shawls, or parasols.
-
Costume shops often carry Victorian-inspired items.
-
Etsy and online vintage sellers offer a wide range of handmade or reproduction pieces.
Fabric Suggestions
Whenever possible, try to choose natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, or silk. These fabrics more closely resemble the textiles used during the Victorian period and tend to look and feel more authentic. Polyester and other synthetic fabrics can look overly shiny or modern and may not breathe as well, especially for outdoor events.
